Unbunched Flowers Who are you?  My name is Amelia Taylor. Who I am depends a bit on who’s asking! I’m Mum to a little man called Charlie who is now 6 months old. I am a wife to an incredible man called JT, and to my friends I’m Meals. A year ago, my dear friend Daisy Turnbull-Brown and I co-founded Unbunched. Unbunched is a floral delivery business. We delight in delivering the joy of flowers to people on a regular basis, without the florist price tag. So who I am has changed a little bit in the past year! Tell us about your business or creative pursuits? What inspired you to get started?  I’m one of the lucky ones who gets to combine the two… A little while ago I had a break from my Corporate career in Marketing. I thought it would be great to focus on something I really love. Since I was little I have always loved flowers, from playing in the garden to being a regular buyer at the markets. And of course, like everyone else I have loved giving and receiving flowers on special occasions. I wondered if it would be possible to turn flowers from something that brought joy on special occasions, to something that could bring joy every day. That’s the inspiration for Unbunched.  We are an online floral service that sources flowers from growers and delivers them directly to your door on a one-off, weekly, fortnightly or monthly subscription basis.

What is your main goal?  I want to dispel the notion that flowers are a luxury. If flowers can bring you joy and contribute to your day-to-day wellbeing then I think they’re a necessity! What has been your greatest achievement to date?  I would have to say Charlie. The joy was not instant as many books would indicate, but the last 6 months he has given me so much happiness and made me realise that the greatest pleasures are some of the simplest. I always laugh with my husband that ‘old me’ would think ‘new me’ is getting pretty soft! There are a few other achievements I am really proud of; I’ve been a volunteer lifesaver for over 13 years, I walked the Kokoda Track with some great friends a few years ago, but the hardest thing was getting Unbunched up and running. It taught me the importance of grit, and it took me way out of my comfort zone. Whenever you do that, the feeling is so much better on the other side! As a working mum how do you find calm in the chaos? It is hard, but it is what it is. Given flowers can reduce stress, enhance creativity and clarity of thought, and improve well-being, I am in the right job to handle the chaos! My husband’s family is interstate and my Mum spends a lot of time caring for my Dad, so unfortunately I don’t have the support network that some new Mum’s are lucky to have. However, in the past few weeks I discovered a gym and pool close to home that has a crèche. Just having an hour or so to do some exercise and gather my thoughts has done wonders for my frame of mind! During the times when you feel lacking in motivation, what helps you get motivated?  I would love to say a session at the gym or yoga, but given my current levels of sleep deprivation, I generally go and have a nap (this isn’t actually new – I used to do this when studying at university, before I had a baby). It’s amazing how much a short sleep can help me reboot. What is your favourite song for getting motivated?  Journey – Don’t Stop Believing. It’s my karaoke go-to and I always smile whenever I hear it. Who inspires you? My husband is incredibly well read, and he is constantly giving me books, podcasts or sending articles to open my mind or assist in this new entrepeneur space I am in. There is always a great take-out and it’s his way of supporting me. I would definitely have to mention Daisy my business partner.  Technically she is a silent, but in reality she is anything but! She is always there to bounce ideas off, and is always encouraging when I want to trial new things – she has been a rock.  Her belief in the idea has meant it has come to life. What is your magic place, where you go to relax and unwind?  The ocean. 5 minutes in it, or around it and I feel 100% better. The flowers markets are also pretty magical – there are always new and unusual blooms. What advice would you give your younger self? Everything happens for a reason. What is your life motto or positive affirmation? “Don’t go with the crowd. Offer something different and if possible, unique.” This resonated with me, the first day I came across it. It was part of 10 business principles by an incredibly talented man called Henry Sonnenberg. Henry was the founder of Hunter Douglas, or  better known in  Australia as Luxaflex Window Fashions. Have you ever had a disappointment that ended up leading you to something wonderful? I have had several disappointments both personally and professionally over the years. Last month we were driving back from Queensland so had plenty of time to kill and we were listening to an interview podcast with Ray Dalio the founder of Bridgewater Associates.  He talked about learning from mistakes and learning from pain – and I have always adopted this myself. Two years ago when the idea for Unbunched first came about, I had been made redundant from what was meant to be a dream job. I was Marketing Manager at Valspar looking after Strategic  Retail and Colour. The strategic retail was Masters Home Improvements (and we all know the story there…). Without that jolt to my life, I have no doubt Unbunched would not have come into being. What do you like to do with your free time? These days sleeping… I love cooking, checking out farmers markets and spending time with my family and friends. And if I have enough time I escape to the beach!   Amelia Taylor
